About Us

The McMaster Social Innovation Lab (MSIL) is a McMaster club based in the basement of Thode Library at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

MSIL is an inventor’s workshop for McMaster students. Our student-run, student-led project combines a specially designed space, trained peer volunteers and a simple problem-solving process to help students apply their knowledge to a diverse array of real-world issues. Our focus on social innovation and personal development sets us apart. Our goal is to awaken the creative, entrepreneurial, and playful soul of the McMaster student body.

Students who are involved with MSIL are encouraged to work on projects that they are passionate about, regardless of whether it is related to their major. The lab is run by a group of student volunteers and a student executive team.

The  "MSIL Process"

What actually happens when you bring a problem or question to MSIL?

We have something called the MSIL Process to help break down problems and find suitable solutions. Volunteers in the MSIL space will help guide you along this process.

  1. Identify who is involved and what has already been done.
  2. Generate a simple, innovative solution (this is after rounds of brainstorming, prototyping, criticizing, and refining - the fun part!)
  3. Pilot the refined project in "real life"
  4. Make final adjustments and share the solution
